MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
• — — A meeting of the Canterbury . Women's Institute was held in the Metaphysical Club's room on May 13. Owing to the in-' clemency of the weather, it was decided to postpone the hearing of the report of delegates to the National' Council until Saturday next. The fortnightly meeting of St Michael's Temperance Society Avas held in the schoolroom, Durham Street, on May 10. The Rev C. A. Fraer was in the chair. Items were given by Miss Jessie Kemp, Master" Robberds, Misses Via and Constance Bird, Cora Button, Maude and May Orme, Constance Jarvis, Vera and Jitta Spry, - Ivy Harding, Flossie Coombs, Masters J. Rhodes, Blake M'Keown, and Norman Brinkinan. " . : The weekly meeting of^ the Young : Men's Christian Association Literary Society, was held last' night. : The proceedings took the. lorni of "-A travellers' evening,"':several members" gave interesting reminiscences of their experiences. Each narration was^'followed by a discussion. " The inaugural meeting of the Rangiora Literary and Debating Society was held a$ the Institute Hall ante-room last evening, when there was a. most encouraging attend- j :u;ce. The evening's programme consisted of an address by the president (the Rev F. W. Fcndall) on " Habit," a pianoforte "solo i by Mi- 0. Gillespie, songs by Mrs J. 0. Josling ar.d Mr W. H. Gillespie, readings by Mr T. W. Ambrose and the Rev A. Doull, ' ••nd recitations by Misses M. Andersbn-and E. Rcgcrs. The committee afterwards met and drew up a syllabus for three months. On Monday evening the Rev H. C. M. Watson addressed about fifty of .the"Kaiar/oi parishioners on the temperance questioh. The address Mas interesting and instructive, and at its clcse a Society based on temperance principles was formed, and a large number oi rames were handed in. It is understood that his Loidship- the Bishop will be -t the next meeting. The Rev H. H. Mathias presided.
