He was asked whether he would support a Bill to connect Auckland and Taranaki by railway, over the Stratford route, in preference to the central route. Captain Russell said he could^not give an opinion as to which was the best route, but he would • support that route which waa proved to be the best in the interests of tlte (colony generally. He considered that Auckland should have railway communication with the rest of the colony. A largely-attended tangi has been •proceeding for the last week at Waahi, King Mahuta'a settlement on the Waikato, over the body of a young chief named Tii Tawhaio, a nephew of Mahuta.
