Cinnabar (quicksilver) ore from the Thames exhibited in Auckland attracts a good deal of attention. Some of it is very rich, being worth, it is said, £50 per ton. .Samples are' shoWn from the outcrop which present a weathered pi ! oxidised appearance, while that from underground, .some, forty feet, looks softer; but is 5 equally -ricTi. The imarkets: for! . quicksilver will be ; New Zealanxt and' Aus- • tralia, and also China, ."which absorbs! 15,000 flasks per annum.. Quicksilver ia largely a monopoly held, by Rothschild, who owns the Almaden mine hi Spain, which has a history of over two thousand three hundred years. It is said that one- , half per cent of cinnabar will pay working expenses, and as a report from the Thames • School for Mines shows that a specimen of this ore selected bj r a director ran from 0.3 to £7.5 per cent of cinnabar, it appears that there is a good future before the Thames quicksilver mines.
