THE HOLIDAY.

The Anniversary Day holiday of 1898 maybe recorded as a success. True, the spirit of "the north-west wind was abroad with its attendant discomforts, bnt the day was a real summer one, and all Christchurch, turned out en fete. During the middle of the day the city was depopulated; immense numbers of people going to the various places of -attraction m the neighbourhood. The meeting of theChristciiurch Racing Club at New, Brighton was well patronised, the crowd in f &ct taxing- the- means of conveyance provided: The Christchurch Cycling Club's sports attracted a gathering of some 4000 people to.. Lancaster Park. The steamers from Lyttelton to Akaroa conveyed exceptionally large numbers of aquatic-loving excursionists to the regatta. The volunteers were as usual to the fore. The E Battery proceeded to Tai Tapu for shot and shell practice, while the marksmen had a field day at the Bromley Range. The marine resorts were largely patronised, 4500 people having been carried on. the Sumner trams. The Port Hills, Papanui and Addington trams . transported 7500 passengers. The passenger traffic on the Lyttelton Railway line was very heavy. No accidents we're reported, and only one arrest, that of a pickpocket, was made daring the' day.
