General Kitchener seized a rocky eminence, ; swune in his reserves, and in ten minutes had the flower of the Khalifa's army caught in a depression under, a cross fire. The Dervishes planted their standards, and died beside them. The dense mass melted away till the last remnant broke and fled. They were driven" across the desert to Omdurman.' Being cut off, the zist Lancers /were caught in an ambush. T'-ey faced two thousand swords. Though outnumbered by four to one, they returned to the charge, and recovered their wounded, who were being savagely slaughtered. • •
