HILL-CLIMBING COMPETITION
Punctually at three o'clock Mr W. G. Williams started the first two riders, and so smartly were the various heats ran off that the final was concluded before 4.30 p.m. There were several excellent contests; the riding as a whole showing considerable improvement on that displayed last year. Th c winner eventually turenejdi up in A. Holmes, last year's champion, who won after a splendid contest with W. Clarkson. Both these riders gave a remarkably fine exhibition of hill-climbing. The officials were: — Judges, Messrs E. H. James, R. H. Thompson and W. E. Thompson ; starter, Mr W. Gr. Williams; timekeeper, Mr G. Jwies; clerk of course, Mr H. Thompson ; stewards Messrs A. T. Washer, C. Pannell, J. H. Tompkiiis, J. Henderson and G. Harris. After the .competition afternocn tea, provided by Mesdames Cole and Taylor, was partaken of by the officials and competitors, and Mr W. E. Thompson tendered to these ladies the cordial thanks of the cyclists for the hospitality which had been accorded, following are results: —

Porter The dis tance ds about 600 yds, and the race was won last year in 2mxn 18sec.
The Ashburton Ariel Cycling Club held its annual opening run-out yesterday Founders took part in tfhe procession and twenty-two in the Road Race. E Willis won the race, covering the ten miles in *s/£min. The roads were in splendid order and the weather was fine. '
