Barometer rising. A decidedly cold snap. Mount Vesuvius is dangerously activo. George I. landed in England on Sept. 16, 1714. The anti-Italian riots are being continued at Trieste. The last German soldiers .left France on Sept. 16, 1873. Cross-country steeplechase to-morrow, at the Show Grounds. Of the American volunteers 125,000 are to remain enrolled. A destructive tidal wave accompanied the Barbardoes hurricane. The first day of the Jewish New Year, 5659, begins at sunset to-night. Lady Halle, the celebrated violinist, has been killed by a falling rock on the Alps. Annual meeting of the Midland Cricket Club to-morrow night, at the Clarendon Hotel. Edhern Pasha has arrested twenty of the ringleaders in the recent disturbances at Candia. Public feeling in the United States is in favour of the retention of the whole of the Philippines. The Emperor of Austria, in memory of the Empress, has established an Elizabeth Order, to be conferred on women. The football match Canterbury v. South Canterbury, played at Temuka yesterday, was won by South Canterbury by nineteen points to ten points. Enormous damage has been done in Barbadoes by a hurricane. Two hundred persons were killed, and it is reported that forty thousand people have been rendered homeless. The committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association last night decided to open the jubilee exhibition in the first week in November, 1900. A special meeting of the Association will be held to decide whether the exhibition shall be New Zealand or Australasian in scope. The Canterbury Industrial Association has decided to thank Mr Brown, president of the Industrial Corporation, for the action taken by him with regard to Mr Morrison's recent statements as to New Zealand apprentices, and to protest against the action of the Canterbury. Trades and Labour Council in endorsing Mr Morrison's statements.
