The Star. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1898.

The highly interesting and important question of Canterbury's Jubilee Exhibition was discussed by the committee of the Industrial Association last night, when it was resolved "that the exhibition should be opened in the first week in November, 1900, and continue to cover the anniversary celebrations and the Lyttelton regatta. We think that the decision arrived at is a wise one. It 'had- been -honed, by some of the members of the Association, that. Canterbury's "Carnival Week" would, in'lSOO, be made equivalent to a movable feast, and that the Jockey Club's meeting and the Agricultural and Pastoral Assccia° lion's show would be held back for the exhibition season. For our part, Aye did not j think it in the least degree likely that this w-ould come about, nor do we think that the financial success of the exhibition would be appreciably, affected if it had. The jubilee show has got to stand upon its own merits, and it will be well if this principle is recognised, from the outset. To November, ISCO, from now may seem " a far cry," but in reality the time is none too long if suck m exhibi . tion as we hope to see is brought into existence. The question came up last ni^ht as to whether the exhibition should be°made an Australasian or t. purely New Zealand one and this point, lias .yet to be determined by a special general meeting. Well, we venture to submit, that, a thoroughly representative New Zealand exhibition would in it«elf be a big undertaking, and would make a very bit. display irdeed. There should, of course, be a complete history of Canterbury in the exhibit. ; there should be.aa perfect an exemplification as possible of all the industries of the colony, and of all its resources ; and to pro:,erlv fill the great number of classes that would be required, would tax the energies of many ,üb-cmn,mttees. If the Assoc b iatlon can succeed m fully demonstrating what industrial *ew Zealand is doing, and as fully evidencing what the possibilities are— in the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdomsit will have accomplished a very big tiling indeed, and something worthy of Canterbury's year of jubilee!
