INSPECTOR BRO HAM'S RESIGNATION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— l feel sure that the report published in this morning's papers of the resignation of Inspector Broham will cause a general feeling of regret throughout Christ-church }Crxd the surrounding districts. The almost unanimous opinion of your readers is, I venture to think, that Inspector Brohaui is a most zealous and capable officer, who has performed the duties pertaining to his important position in an eminently fair, impartial and satisfactory manner, and that his retirement from the Police Force at the present time would be little short of a public calamity. If Mr Broham, for reasons of his" own, is really desirous of retiring from his office, there is, of course, nothing to be done in the matter beyond, perhaps, the recognition in some form or other of his meritorious services to the colony ; but if, as there seems Fome reason to suppose is the case, Mr Broham has tendered his resignation solely in consequence of the .unfavourable nature of the report of the Police Commission upon the discipline of the Police Force in this district, then it seems to me that some steps should at once be taken with a view to the retention of Mr Broham in Mb present position. Mnv I suggest that a public meeting should be called, either by his Worship the Mayor Or by: some" of "our leading citizens, to consider this important question ?-I am, etc^ cEEsswELL Christchurch, Sept. 14, 1898.
