INPROVINCIAL SPORTIN G GOSSIP.
• ' [Correspondents " Canterbury Thies."! OTAGO. DUNEDIN, May 16. The sensation of the week in sporting circles has been the conviction and sentence o f two months' imprisonment passed on Martin Taylor and two other Christchurch bookmakers for keeping premises for the purposes of. " tote " betting. :Randall and Higgins are not particularly well known down this way, but Taylor is a great favourite with coursing people, and for years his burly figure has been conspicuous at the Plumpton meetings held at the Forbury, -Considerable sympathy is felt for him, and one constantly hears the opinion expressed that the sentence passed on him was, under the circumstances, unduly severe. Plotter, who ran a great horse in the C.J.C. Derby, won by Uniform, has been sold by Messrs Hazlett and Stephenson to Mr R. Ellis for 30gs. That race seemed to take all the stamina out of the son of Catesby, and on his proving a thorough rogue, lie was gelded. The only visiting horses which have put in an appearance at the Forbury are Double Event, Cannonshot, Miss Lochiel raid The Orphan, who came down from Ashburton on Saturday night. Double Event is evidently very well.
