THE HOLIDAY.

ST PATRICK'S DAY. To-day, being St Patrick's Day, was observed as a partial holiday, and the green ribbon was very much in evidence. The morning broke dull, and there was every appearance of rain, which caused the early excursion trains to Culverden and South Canterbury to be but poorly patronised. As the morning wore on the sun came out bright, and the weather was all that could be wished for holiday making. At 9.30 a.m. the children attending the Catholic Schools mustered on the South Belt to the number of over 1000, and, under the Marist Brothers, were marched to the railway station, and at 10.30 a special train of eighteen carriages, all filled", left for the Riccarton racecourse, where the Catholic demonstration is being held. Large numbers went by tram to Sumner, where the annual gala is being held, and .those interested in . such matters visited the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting.
