TPek PRESS Association.! L AUCKLAND, Mab6h 15 A gumdigger named Alexander De Noon committed suicide by hanging himself at A oroa, near Mangawhare. At the inquest it was stated that De Noon, was very disheartened at his want of success on the gumfields, and a verdict was returned that deceased committed suicide whilst of unsound mind. The coining Easter encampment of volunteers in the Auckland district is expected to be the most successful iv point of numbers held here for a number of years past. About fourteen volunteer companies are expected to be present. John Henry Eowe, seaman on the cutter Spitfire, has been committed for trial on a charge of assaulting Charles Gardiner, the cutter's cook. At the criminal sessions, in the charge of arson against Henry Hayson, in connection with the Kingsland fire, the jury returned a verdict of " Not guilty," on the ground that the accused was not sane. The old man Henry Hall, of Pirongia, who attempted to cut his throat through the death of his wife, has been committed for trial. ; A woman named Mrs Flanagan recently attempted, at Paeroa, to commit suicide by swallowing a number of match-heads. She is now considered out of danger.
