The Engineer" reported on the petition from Mr Wilson and others to deepen Ehodes' main drain from Schlomski's house upwards, that the work proposed . would, doubtless, have a beneficial effect on the adjoining 1 lands. The cost would be from £7 to £8. Eepairs which would cost from JJIO to £12 were required to the low-pres-sure piston of the eastern pumping engine. The report was adopted. DEPUTATIONS. A deputation consisting of the Mayor and two members of the Linwood Borough Council waited on the Board to ask it to make a brick barrelled drain .in Tuain Street. The Council was willing- to raise .£BOO for the work, the interest on the cost of which would amount to" «£6O per annum, and the Drainage Board was. asked to contribute J320 per annum of this.sum. All the raenr&era of the -deputation stated tKat the draitf had been, and still was, ifoe one great nuisance which existed in Linwood. The Chairman said the Board would consider ita legal power in the matter. The Mayor of Linwood stated that whenever of late typhoid had broken out in Linwood, it had always been in the immediate vicinity of the drain. Two or taree deaths had recently occurred from this cause. In reply to a question from Mr E. M. Taylor, the deputation explained that the currency oE the loan was for twenty years. The Chairman said the Board would be happy to help the Linwood Borough Council, but the legal position would have to be considered. The deputation thanked the Board and withdrew. After some discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Mr Fisher, seconded by Mr Burgess — "That the Drainage Board defray one-third of the cost of constructing the drain, such cost not to exceed .£270." Messrs D. Kruse'and J. Borgfeldt waited on the Board with reference to the state of the drains through, what is known as Kruse's land near Papanui. Mr Kruse stated that the present dry season was very favourable to the improvement of these drains. Before the construction of the branch drains, which were in many instances larger than the so-called main drain, he could crop his land every year without suffering any damage from floods ; but for want of a proper outlet in the main drain the water was dammed baok on to their lands. He suggested the cutting of a new drain into the Horse-shoe Lake, which would give a fall of seventeen feet in a distance of three miles. The water might be got away by deepening the drain on Winter's Eoad. It was not the water incidental to their own lands which caused the trouble, but the water which had been brought on from Eiccarton and elsewhere. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Fisher, seconded by Mr Burgess, that the Engineer should report fully on the matter at next meeting, and should also endeavour to ascertain what sum of money, if any, the residents of the district would be prepared to subscribe towards the cost of the work asked for. The meeting then terminated. J
