FPer Press Association."] NAPIER, March 15. , To-day the Hon J. D. Ormond retired J from the Education Boards of which he has been chairman since the passing of the Act. He made an interesting speech, in Which he reviewed the progress of, education in Hawke's Bay since 185S, idealing more especially with the last twenty years, ; during •which he has held the position of < chairman. The Board passed the follow- ; ing resolution : — " That the Board agree to ( place- on record its great regret at the ! retirement of its Chairman, the Hon J. D. ' Ormond. For the long period of twenty i years he has presided over the deliberations 1 with great judgment and perfect courtesy. < As the result of his forethought and care, the business of the Board has < been conducted through all these j year 3 with great unanimity and great advantage to the cause of education, while i his large knowledge of public affairs in ] New Zealand often came to be of great i importance in guidance. Although he re- < tires from the Board the members feel assured that if at any time they have to 1 appeal to Parliament on any matter of j large educational interest he will continue ] to give the Board and the cause of educa- ' tion his influential support." i An old man named George Clayton, ( suffering from cancer, poisoned himself i with a solution of match -heads, in the ] Refuge. < The Education Department has ap- 1 proached the Hospital Board with a pro- ] posal to give two scholarships of £25 each i to girls attending the Maori boarding < schools, to enable them to undergo a train- s ing in nursing and dressing at the hos- j pital. The proposal was adjourned. 1
