MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
" Man and the Machine" was the subject which called forth a lively discussion at the meeting of the Socialist Church last night, in Hobbs' Buildings, The discussion generally pointed to the conclusion that those most directly benefited by the introduction of machinery were its owners, and the moral deduced was to transfer the ownership from private hands to those of the people as a corporate body. On Thursday the Eangiora Druids paid a visit to their brethren at Kaiapoi. In the afternoon a cricket match was played, which resulted in favour of the visitors by 160 runs to 84. G. H. Felton 63 (retired) and J. J. Wilson 37 were the highest scorers. After the match, the visitors were entertained at dinner at the Pier Hotel, and a cribbage and euchre match followed, in which Rangiora was again victorious by 17 games to 8. Before leaving for home the visiting brethren returned thanks for the fraternal reception they had met with.
