CABLE INTERRUPTION.
ACTION OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. Beceived March 10, 1 a.m. SYDNEY, March 9. English cable messages are suffering great delay, causing inconvenience tc business circles. The overland line to Port Darwin is believed to be the main cause. It seems to be in a hopelessly bad condition, and is again interrupted this evenin g work having to filter over the West Australian lines, which are in an equally unsatisfactory state. Received March 10,10 a.m. MELBOURNE, March 10. Great inconvenience ha 3 been occasioned during the last few weeks by the breakdown of the overland telegraph wire. The South Australian Government, realising its responsibility, has resolved upon vigorous action to improve the service. Mr Cockbum, the Ministerial head of the Post and Telegraph Department, has intimated that the Government has decided to duplicate the wire along the entire route, so that if one wire breaks down another will be available. At dangerous crossings, where floods and storms are likely to interrupt communication, the line will be duplicated, and in addition the line will be worked on the duplex principle. ;- !
'v The following memo; was received from the. Telegraph Department this morning: —^Adelaide advises^ ;The cablei • traffic being worked via Broome. Expect to have some cables through shortly. The Port Darwin line is unworkable."
