MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
♦ The Sons and Daughters of Temperance, Kaiapoi, held a meeting on Tuesday evening. There was only a moderate attendance, and Mr Evans presided. Mr Bowmaker gave an account of his mission work while in Sydney. Songs were sung and an enjoyable time was spent. The monthly meeting of No. 32 Star of Sydenham Orange Lodge was held in the Engineers' Hall, Sydenham, on Tuesday evening. The Lodge was opened by the W.M., Bro P. Taylor. A large amount of correspondence was dealt with, and one candidate was initiated, Bros Weir and Cay gill giving the lecture. A hearty vote of thanks was passed "to the visitors from Nos.- 1, 3, 4, 25 and 33, who suitably responded. The fortnightly meeting of the Court Star of Canterbury Foresters' Lodge was held on Monday evening, when C.K. Bro J. G-. Armitage presided. The Woodwards reported eleven members on the sick fund. Correspondence was read from several Courts in reference to sick brethren. The O.R. read a memorandum from the District Secretary stating that the next district meeting would be held at the Foresters' Hall, Kaiapoi; also giving an outline of the business to be transacted. P.C.R. H, J. Eanger was elected delegate to the Friendly Societies' Association. Bros. Wold and Harris, two visiting brethren from Melbourne, attended the Court and were cordially welcomed, for which they returned thanks. Sick pay was passed and the meeting closed. The receipts of the evening were JB7I 10s lOd. The annual general meeting of shareholders m the Ashburton Permanent Uuilding Society was held yesterday afternoon, when the Chairman of Directors, Dr Trevor, in. submitting the twenty-third annual report and balance-sheet, said that he had to congratulate the shareholders on the firm condition of the Society.
