DIOCESAN STANDING COMMITTEE.
The Standing Committee of the Diocesan Synod of Christchurch met on Tuesday. The Bishop read a letter from a Churchman in the diocese, who desired to be anonymous, offering for the acceptance of the diocese a portrait in oils, the work of Herr Lindauer, which had been exhibited at the recent session of the General Synod, and purchased by the writer. The Standing Committee accepted the gift on behalf of the Diocesan Synod, and requested the Bishop to convey its cordial thanks to the donor. The conditional grants are on the same conditions as last years' grants. The report stated that the Rev J. F. Teakle, organising secretary, was compelled by ill-health to obtain leave of absence for twelve months to visit England and seek the aid of a specialist. The committee expressed its deep regret, and voted the sum of £75 from the Church Mission Fund, part of the usual salary of the organising secretary, and £50 from the Invalided Clergy Fund, towards Mr Teakle's expenses. The recommendation that no locum tenens of the office of organising secretary should be appointed, was adopted, as the balance of his usual salary was required in order to meet the expected deficit in the Church Mission Fund for this year. Reports from the sub-committees on diocesan education, Neiv Zealand Church Ncvjs, and buildings, were received and adopted. It was resolved that steps should be taken for the carrying on in Mr Teakle's absence of the work of inspection and examination of schools. Plans for a vicarage at Halswell were approved, subject to the addition of a study and minor alterations, and the Church Property Trustees were recommended to grant the capital sum of £250 towards its erection. Plans for a new stone church at Temuka were approved, subject to the completion of the specifications. An application for a loan for repairing the vicarage at Prebbleton was referred to the Archdeacon to report thereon. The committee then rose.
