A SPLENDID PAPER.

Dr J. Miillev, writing to the Editor of the Cantmbary Times, from Milan (Italy), says : " Through my friend, Mr Eebay, I have received a copy of your splendid paper, which reminds me of the years I spent in your country. In my days, the Canterbury Times was a baby in swaddling clothes, and its marvellous growth must be very gratifying to its friends. The excellent phototypes of the flood at Greymouth and other incidents show that newspaper enterprise is as far ahead in New Zealand as in any other country in the world. You deserve the utmost credit for your beautifully illustrated and admirably edited paper, and the fact that the results of your labours have reached as far as this shows that you are widely advertising the attractions of your much-favoured islands." Mr W. Parker also writes ; — " I sent one of your illustrated Christinas numbers to a gentleman in the Back of England, and I have just received his reply, as follows : — ' I have also to thank you for the very interesting illustrated Christmas number, which gives one a splendid idea of the scenery of the colony. 1 should very much like to come over and see for myself your magnificent country, but lam afraid such an opportunity will never occur. Your climate, too, has such a world-wide repu-

tation that it tempts one to visit you at all °?f vi_7 our iDd eed has some vitality."
