BOROUGH COUNCILS.
KAIAPOI. The usual meeting of the Kaiapbi Borough Council was held last evening 1 ; present— The Mayor ; and Councillors Clark, Feldwick, Hayman, Knight, Bugg and Pearce. Leave of absence was granted to Councillors Hopkins and Simpson. Correspondence was received— From Mr Store r, asking permission to open a roadway in the footpath in Charles Street. Granted conditionally. From Mr Moore, M.H.R., promising his best efforts in procuring a better lease for tbe North Road Eeserve. •From the secretary of the Fire Insurance Association, in answer to the Council's application for a grant to the Fire Brigade, stating that a concession was already allowed in consideration of the complete state of the brigade. A number Of Objections were received to the assessment of properties, and the Clerk was instructed to attend the sitting. 1b.9 Mayor said he had sworn in a number of gentlemen as members of the fire police, and rules had been framed, which the Council agreed to. The matter of providing hats, badges and lanterns for their use was referred to the Fire Prevention Committee. The Surveyor reported that all the outstanding rates were now collected. A progress payment of .£2O was made to Mr T. Storer on his Charles Street contract. A lengthy report was given by the Sanitary Committee. Generally speaking the town was in a very satisfactory state. The Cemetery Committee reported having accepted the tender of Mr Eichards for continuing the footpath. Specifications were read in connection with the cleaning of Dudley's drain, and the matter was held over. Tenders for cleaning out other drains were accepted. The Council then sat as the Domain Board and accepted the tender of Mr Tourelle' for erecting a shed. Other matters having been dealt with, the proceedings closed

Indißposition ia given aB the official reason for the postponement, but it w believed that the real reason is the disturbed political outlook.
