[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 7. His Excellency the Governor returns to Wellington on March 27, and after paying a visit to the scene of the fires in the Pahiatua district, goes on to Hastings and Napier to meet the Native chiefs, -who are anxious to tender him a formal reception. The Government has granted Mrs Hill, widow of the late Mr E. Hill, collector of Customs, Christchurch, a compassionate allowance equal to a year's salary. An application has been received from two Chinese married women for the removal of the poll-tax of .£IOO, on the ground that they married naturalised Chinainen on board ship before landing in New Zealand. The matter has been referred to the Crown Solicitor for his opinion. The Premier has received a portrait of the Queen with her Majesty's autograph; as a souvenir of the Jubilee. Her Majesty was taken in the dress worn by her on the occasion. The Aorangi, from Wellington, with the colonial mails of Feb. 12, reached Vancouver on March 5, the due date.
