THE ROUTE-MAKCHING COMPETITION. The route inarching competition -will take place this evening. The ' course is to be the same as that chosen for the competition last year :— Starting from the western side of Cathedral Square, thence via, Colombo Street to the foot of the Port Hills, thence skirting the hills to the Ferry Bridge, thence via the Ferry Eoad, the East Belt and Worcester Street to the east side of Cathedral Square. Teams will fall-in in order of seniority in Worcester Street West at 6.40 p.m. The officers will draw for places, ammunition will be served out, and teams wijl, start at intervals of five minutes from 7 p.m. The judges will be Colonels Gordon and Francis, V.D., and Major Slater, ;V.D. Lieutenant R. H. Hhode3, Sergeant J.R. Wiike'lin and Messrs A. Gundersen and A. J. Francis will act as timekeepers. The conditions are much thesaino as at the competition last year, except £hat men have to walk unaided by any of the other members of the team. His Excellency the Governor, who has given his patronage to the competition, will witness the start and finish. The C.Y.C. will furnish an escort for his Excellency's carriage. The Canterbury Mounted Eifl«3 will provide a section to keep the way clear on the start of the teams, and two orderlies to accompany each one. Detachments of the foot corps of the Garrison will parade in front of the post office at 9 p.m., in order to keep the passage clear on the return of the teams, which may be looked for about a quarter to ton o'clock. Last year the distance, thirteen miles and a quarter, was covered by the winners, the College Rifles, in 2hr 4Smin. It is expected in some quarters that that time will be beaten this year. Seven teams will compete, viz., Lyttelton Naval Artillery, Cbristchurch City Guards, Christ's College Rifles, Christchurch City Rifles, Kaiapoi Rifles, Rangiora 'Rifles and Imperial Rifles. The ■ City Guards team will consist of Lieutenant Sandford, Sergeants Ward and Meddings, Corporals Thompson and. Gard- - ner, Lance-Corporals A lexander. and Dyer, Privates T. Murphy, Allard, Sandford, H. Farland, W. J. Farland, Smyth, Grange, Dickonson, Falkimler, Hewitt, Page and Pentecost. There are also three or four emergencies. The Christ's College Rifles team will be selected from the following: — Lieutenant Norman L. D. Smith. Sergeaut Colclough, Sergeant Gibson, Corporal Wilson, LanceCorporal Marsh, Privates Cotton, Denbam, Dixon, Dudley, Harper, Hobbs, Kirton, Middleton,Nicholls,Norris,Overton, Styche, Teape, Wallace and Williams. The Christchurch City Rifles team will be selected from the following: — Captain Pairbairci, Colour-Sergeant Bean, Sergeant Bourdot, Corporals Turvoy and Dodd, Lance-Corporals Dodd and Eoxborough, Privates Allen, Beaumont, D. S. Bowman, A. A. Bowman, Bradley, Brooker, Fleck, Farrant, Ffrost, Glover, Jackman, May, liestall, Spry and Webb. The Imperial Rifles team will be Lieutenant Holderness, Colour-Sergeant Butcher, Sergeant Brown, Corporal Shanley, Lance-Corporals Moncrief a»d Caskey, Privates Johnston, Knight, Chapman, Anderson, Puvitt, Williamson, Orchard, Allard, Hervey, Wilson, Latiinore, Denharn and Priston ; emergencies — Privates Watsou and Spry. MISCELLANEOUS. The resignation of Lieutenant Simpson, of the Kaiapoi Rifles, has been accepted. A Government parade of the Christchurch City Guards was held last night. Thirty-four members attended under Lieutenants Sandford and Bishop, who exercised them in company drill in the shed The three guns of the E Battery which were sent to Wellington several weeks ago for repairs have' been returned, having been re-bushed. A church parade of the E Battery will be held to-morrow morning. Tho corps will parade at the drillshed at 'J a.m., and will go by the 10 rt.m. tram to Sumner, where the members will attend divme service at All Saints' Church. After service they will have luncheon in the Town Hall, and they will return to town in tho evening. _. n Entries for the New Zealand Rifle Association Meeting will close this evening. A parade of the Queen's Cadets will be ■ held at the Drillshed at 8 a.m. to-morrow, for the purpose of attending divine service at the Governor's Bay church. : Van Gabbler: "I see the fashion is coming in again for ladies to wear earrings.
