THE VOLUNTEERS.

Yesterday evening a cribbage match, took place at the Christchurch City Rifles' orderly-room between teams, twelve a side, representing H.M.S. Mildura and the City Rifles. The latter won by twelve games to ten. After the conclusion of play the Rifles entertained their visitors at a very pleasant smoke concert. Mr Edwards catered in a highly satisfactory style. The chair was occupied by Sergeant Parker, of the City Eifles, and the vice-chair by Corporal Caslin, of the marines of HJVE.S. Mildura. The following toasts were honoured: — "The Queen"? "The Navy and Army," proposed by Sergeant Hopkins (City Eiiies), and responded to by Corporal Caslin ; " Our Visitors," proposed by Sergeant Parker, and responded to by Private Jones, R.M.LX ; and " The Press," proposed by Sergeant Jackson. Songs were sung by Corporal Turvey, Seaman Hines, Private "Wallace, EJVLLJ., Privates Beanmont, "Wiffen and Cork (City Rifles), and others, and a very pleasant time was spent. It would appear that there is likely to be a hitch in connection with the proposed surprise alarm, which it was intended to give at Lyttelton for the purpose, of turning out • the Lyttelton volunteers. The fallowing notice was yesterday posted in the place usually occupied by company notices of the N Battery Artillery : — "N Battery Artillery.— ln the absence of orders .from the officer commanding the district, the Battery will not respond to any night alarm that may be given. — A. M. M'lntyre, captain commanding." Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon will pay a vißit to the Christ's College Eifles camp at Sumner this evening.
