BOROUGH COUNCILS.
StJMNER. A meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday night ; present — The Mayor and Councillors Monck, Heskett, Graham, White and Mills. Councillor Hauraer wrote, asking for leave of absence for one month; granted. Correspondence was read: — From Messrs Stringer and Cresswell, solicitors to the Council, stating that the reservoir site was now finally fixed up. From the same, giving an opinion as to hawkers. Mr C. Phillips, superintendent of the Fire Brigade, wrote asking for leave of absence to attend a fire brigade demonstration in Auckland, and stating that he had made complete arrangements in case of firo 'during" his absence. Agreed to. Mr C. Crawford wrote, asking for leave of absence. Granted; the borough engineer to obtain the services of a competent man whilst Mr Crawford was away. Mr J. Carter wrote, asking for leave of absence. Granted, provided he can get some reputable person to do his work. Mr A. Blood wrote, stating that some people without licenses were hawking goods in Sumner, and that he did not think it fair for the Council to allo.v it. It was resolved that the Clerk should inform Mr Blood that the matter would bo looked into at once. The Mayor stated that the College Rifles, who were in camp at Monck's paddock, had consented to eive a concert on Saturday night, to be followed with a dance, and that the proceeds would be devoted to the Oxford Relief Fund. On behalf of the Council, he (the Mayor) had given the promoters the patron.igo of the Council, and he hoped the whole of the Cbunoillors would attend. The Council expressed its approval of .the Mayor's action, and members said that they would attend the entertainment. The Finance Committee'. 1 ) report was r.oad and adopted. Councillor Mills, chairman ol the Finance Committee, stated that tht small balance of the loan account was still in a separate account at th^ bank. H amounted to i!ls &*' 4>d, and he suggested that it should bo tnmsferrcil to the general account, and this loan account closed. It was resolved thai this suggestion should bo carried out It waa unanimously resolved to instruct the Inspector to givo notice to certain ■campers, who had not paid their fees, thai they must not light a fire except in a properly constructed ehimnoy, and if thej did he was to lay an information against them at once. It was resolved that a teal case should be laid against owners o property who had barbed-wirp fences oi the main street, and that notice should b< given to property-ownuM. whoso trees over hung the footpaths to have them trunmec within., seven days, or proceedings will bi taken against them. ..,„._.,,.'
