• [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. Jan. 27. The quantity of cargo handled by the Harbour Board for 1897 shows anincrease, as compared with the previous year, of 8253 tons, or 15 per cent. Wool represented an increase of 8£ per cent. The tonnage of vessels arriving during the year also showed a substantial increase. With regard to the recent delay in tho inspection of the Aorangi by the Health Officer, the Harbour Board decided to write to the Colonial Secretary and urge the relaxation of the present rules and the adoption of a system in force in other parts of the world of granting pratique at any time on the production of signed by the captain arid surgeon of the vessel, stating that there is and has been no illness on board. It was also suggested that in order to prevent delay the owners of vessels should be asked to enter into a bond not to bring to the colony persons who were affected mentally or physically. Wednesday has again been selected as the half-holiday under the Shops and Shop Assistants Act for Wellington and suburbs. A proposal in favour of Saturday found no seconder. Captain Johnson, who has been harbour pilot for several years past, has been appointed to succeed the late Captain Halliday as harbourmaster.
