MAGISTERIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH. / Saturday, Jan. 8. (Before Mr W. H. Cooper, J.P.) Drunkenness.— -Two first offenders were fined 5s and costs, in default twentyfour hours' imprisonment. — Another first offender was also charged with obscene language. Constable Nelligan deposed that he arrested the accused in Tuam Street, when the latter used the language laid to his charge. Accused admitted having been drunk, but denied having used obscene language. He wanted to know why two witnesses who were present at the time of the arrest, and who had followed them to the lock-up, had not been summoned. A voluntary witness, named William Meares, stated that he saw the constable arrest accused. At the time accused was going home peaceably and wished good night to the constable, who then engaged him in conversation. After the arrest witness and another man followed them, about eight feet behind, and witness remonstrated with the constable outside the station, and also with SergeantMajor Ramsay. He did not hear accused use the language imputed to him. The Bench fined accused 10s for being drunk, and dismissed the charge of obscene language with a caution.
