«. STOPPAGE OF AN ELECTROLYSIS DEPAETMENT. Uhnited Press Association— By Electric Telegrap— Copyright. Eoceived Jan. 8, 11.25 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 8. Under instructions from Melbourne the directors of the Sulphide Corporation portion of the works at Cockle Creek, Newcastle, have shut down for an indefinite period, it having been found unprofitable to further continue Ashcrof t's patented process for the extraction of zinc from the ore, owing entirely to the low grade of ore treated. The process itself worked admirably, and had the expectations with regard to receiving higher grade ores been realised, proof was not wanting that it would have returned a handsome profit. The process has not been entirely abandoned, and it is hoped at a future date to work the electrolysis department at a profit. The present stoppage is due to the representations of preference shareholders in England. Forty men are thrown out of employment.
