ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Dec. 13. Wat Tiley, who was engaged in tunnelling into the bank of the Kawarau River, near Cromwell, was found lying dead in the drive. It is presumed that heart tfieeflge wsj the, cause of dfiftt h < An unfortunate accident happened shortly after five o'clock yesterday afternoon to Mr W. Garrard. He was starting the Post and Telegraph Half-mile Race at Lancaster Park, but had lent his revolver to a friend, and was using a doublebarrelled pistol in its stead. He was standing between the limit and the scratch men, and had fired off the pistol twice, but the report was not loud enough to be heard by all the competitors. Thinking the pistol was unloaded he snapped it again, holding his left hand over the muzzle. A charge which was in the barrel exploded, shattering the palm of his hand. He was taken Ito the hospital, and late last night was ! reported to be progressing satisfactorily.
