WAIM A KARIRI RIVER BOARD.
VISIT OF INSPECTION. { The members of the Waimakariri River j Board visited the now works in progress I near the head of the Kaputone Creek at noou to-day. There were present— Messrs R. W. England, R. M. TaylOr,J. Glanville, C. F. Money, H. W. Peryman, G. E. Carpenter, T. Wilson and .T. C. Atkinson, members of the Board: Messrs H. Allison (secretary) and .Teal (overseer) were also present, and Mr C. Cuff (late City Surveyor) was there as a guest. Good progress has been made with the work. More than two chains of an earthen embankment Bft in height have been completed, and the construction of a toe, composed of blocks of concrete, enclosed in wool bales, and weighing from four to five tons apiece, will be finished in a few days. The down-stream side of the toe is composed of alternate layers of wire-bound broom fascines and shingle, the ends of the fascines projecting well to fend off the backwash. It is also proposed to plant the ground on the downstream side of the embankment with the osier willow, which it is hoped will not only stay the rush of the water, but 2'rove a source of profit. The Board ', has lately taken the land (about two acres) necessary for these works from Mr j W. Acton-Adams, under the Public Works Act. As the members of j the Board consider if inadvisable to ! let a creek on the upstream side j of the embankment run through that con- I struction, it is proposed to • turn the creek ! into the river, the diversion to be made on the land just acquired by the Board. A stroll along the river bank showed that I the last flood had deposited a large | quantity of shingle along the bank, and that a new and well-defined spit has formed on the down-stream side of the works in progress. j
