THE WRECK OF THE TASMANIA.
One of the two divers who have been engaged . in the task of attempting to recover the mails from the wrecked steamer Tasmania was in Wellington on Wednesday. He does not believe that the disappearance of the Tasmania's masts is due to the vessel having listed, but is (says the Nexv Zealand Times) of opinion that she has sunk further into the sand. It will be remembered that when a diver first went down to the steamer he ascended after a two hours' stay in the water, bleeding at the ears. It has, therefore, been deemed advisable to secure a stronger diving suit, better able to
withstand the heavy pressure of water, and this gear has accordingly been obtained from the Public Works Department. The diver is confident; that all the mails will be obtained without much additional trouble. As a good deal has been said about the likelihood of the Tasmania being raised, it is interesting to note that the recovery of a sunken vessel somewhat similarly situated is not considered beyond the bounds of possibility, for the last Home papers to hand announce that an attempt is to be made to raise the North German Lloyd large steamer Elbe, which sank off Lowestoft in January, 18fl5. The work is being undertaken by the American "Wreckage and Salvage Company, of Milwaukee.
