Drunkenness. — James . Campbell, who had been remanded a week previously on a charge of helpless drunkenness, was now fined 5s and ordered to pay 12s 6d medical expenses, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.

Fobiouß Driving: — David Barry was fined . 10s, and. costs 95,. for furious driving.

Alleged Theft. — Thomas Haynes was charged with having, on July 31, stolen .£6 18s, the property of Robert Loohhead. Mr Malley, who appeared for the accused, asked that the amount might be reduced to <£5 in order to enable the accused to be dealt with, summarily, but the Bench did not see their way to grant the application. The" evidence led by Chief -Detective Henderson showed that the accused had been employed to canvass for orders for sewing machines, and on July 26 a hand sewing machine had been delivered for him to a purchaser. He had told his principal that half the money would be paid on August 13, but it had been found that he had received the full amount pn July 31. When arrested the accused said that the company had been very quick about it ; he had been trying to collect money to pay them. The accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, the accused in his own recognisance of £50 and .two sureties of £25 each.

A Neighbour's Quarrel. — John Wakefield was charged with having used insulting language to Rebecca Pritchard, who asked that he might be bound over to keep the peace. Mr Andrews appeared for the complainant, and Mr Beattie for the defendant. The trouble had arisen over a complaint made by Mrs Pritchard, as to the behaviour of defendant's children. The Bench did not consider the casn sufficiently serious to order the defendant to find sureties, and dismissed the information with a caution.

School Attendance. — Patrick M'Kernon, Frederick Denhain, William Townseud, William Watt, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Warren, John Bush and William Clark, were each fined 2s for failing to send their children to school the reqnired • number of times.- A case against Thomas Sutnmerton, in respect of three children, was dismissed, as a medical certificate showed that the children were in poor health.
