MR CHAMBERLAIN'S NOTE
REFUSAL TO RECOGNISE SUZERAINTY.
[Pkb Press Association.! # LONDON, August 25. President Kruger, in his reply regarding Mr Chamberlain's claims to British suzerainty, states . that he desires t<> maintain the 1884 convention, which contains no single word bearing precisely on the question of suzerainty. The Transvaal would not recognise the suzerainty because it was entirely opposed to the. convention.
PRETORIA, AuarsT 26. In his speech in the Yelksraad on the .question of British suzerainty, President Kruger" referred to tie article in the Convention providing ihat foreign treaties entered into by the Transvaal shall be referred to Great Britain, and admitted that if within six months any treaty was found to conflict with British interests it might be disallowed.
