RELEASE OF PRISONERS.

CHEMIS LIBERATED,

Louis Chemis, the prisoner who has been serving sentence at Lyttelton Gaol, and who has been the subject of so much controversy, was released at 8 a.m. yesterday, the responsible advisers of her Majesty in New Zealand having decided to mark the occasion of her sixty years' reign by extending mercy to several persons serving long sentences. The favoured ones who were serving in . Lyttelton gaol are Chemis and a female prisoner who was sentenced some time ago on a charge of false pretences. Mrs Chemis came down to Lyttelton on Monday, but it is stated that she had no definite information as to whether her husband was to be liberated. Indeed, so " close" was the intention of the Government kept that Chemis himself was totally ignorant of the fact that he was so soon to be a free man. It was not till 7 o'clock yesterday morning that Governor Cleary conveyed the welcome tidings to the unfortunate man, and his delight upon the announcement being made to him was unbounded. Chemis was met at the gaol gates by his wife, Mr and Mrs Cunnington, and the Rev Father Salvador, who were the sole outsiders who were present to witness his reappearance as a free man. The female prisoner released is named Alexander.
