TIMARU MILITARY CIRCUS.
The Timaru military circus created a very favourable impression at its first performance in Christchurch last aright. There was a large audience, which, by its hearty applause, testified to its appreciation of the programme provided. The first portion of the entertainment consisted of balancing on a wire rope and of the equestrian exercises which are usually a part of performances of this description. Special mention may be made of a clever pony, and the comic element, as provided by a clown and a dummy, was certainly a good deal above the average. The second part was devoted to a representation of Dick Turpin's ride to York. The various incidents in the romance, which is so dear to the heart of every schoolboy, were very cleverly depicted. The absence of scenery, of course, made very realistic effects impossible ; but anybody acquainted with the story of the drama could have no difficulty in following it through its different phases. The various characters were sustained for the most part very effectually, and the performance, as a whole, was highly creditable. It will be repeated to-day at a matinee, and again in the evening,
