LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Volunteers. — The officer commanding the Canterbury district expresses his high approbation of the soldierly bearing, neatness and steadiness of the volunteers under his command yesterday.

Christchurch Working Men's Club. — In connection with the Quadrille Assembly, a pound "social" will be held in the social hall of the above club to-night, at eight o'clock, when a large attendance is expected. A capital programme of music has been arranged for the dancing, and it promises to be one of the best "socials" ever held at the club.

Meat for the Poor. — Mr W. B. Clarkson having purchased a bullock weighing lOOOlbs, has desired Mr H. B. Lane, butcher, of Cashel Street, to cut it up and give it to the poor between 8 and 10 p.m. this evening. Applicants must produce recommendations signed by ministers of religion, members of Parliament, Justices of the Peace or the Mayor of Christchurch.

Concert. — The social hall atthe Working Men's . Club was crowded to excess last night on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee concert. Many ladies were present, as were also visiting members from Wellington, Wanganui, Napier, Kaiapoi, Ashburton, Teuiuka, Geraldine, and elsewhere. Mr R. Irvine was in the chair, and tho toast of " Her Majesty " was received with musical honours. Many patriotic songs were sung during the evening. At 11.15 p.m. the company adjourned to Cathedral Square to join in the smginj of the National Anthem there.

"Lincoln and Laughter." — So as not to interfere with the Record Reign celebrations, Mr Frank Lincoln did not give; an entertainment last evening, although a number of people went, to the Temple under the impression that the place would be. open. Mr Lincoln will appeai; this evening, and has arranged to prolong the season until Thursday.

Selwtn Cycling Club. — Road races from Hororata to Whitecliffs took place yesterday. A Btiff nor'-wester was blowing most of the day. The following are the results: — Sixteen Miles — L. Porte r 1, S. Reed 2, G. Porter 3. Ten Miles— F. Hutchins 1, G. Porter 2, S. Reed 3. Six Miiea— M. Thome 1, A. Thome 2, G. Porter 3.

PbeSentations. — On Monday, cening the members of the We3t Melton Cricket Club assembled in the Library for the purpose of making a presentation to the president, Mr J. C. Trickett, on the occasion of his marriage. Mr D. Sinclair, tho captain of the club, made the presentation, which consisted of a handsome writing desk, bearing the inscription — "Presented to the president, Mr J. C. Trickett, on the occasion of hi 3 marriage, by the members of the West Melton Cricket Club, 1897." Mr Trickett suitably replied, and the singing of " He's a Jolly Good Fellow" brought the proceedings to a close. — The members of the Church of England at Glentunnel presented Mrs Connor with a lady's dressing bag, on the occasion of her leaving the district, as a mark of their appreciation of her services as organist for the past three years.

Oddfellowship. — The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge of Oddfellows was held on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance. The officers elected for the ensuing six months were — N.G., Bro W. Griffiths; V.G., Bro J. Bishop; E.S., Bro F. Gulliver. Bro E. Jeffreys takes the Grand Master's chair, and was elected lecture-master. Bro Shankland, the retiring grand master, was accorded a vote of thanks, and it was decided to place his name on the merit-board,, and present him with a framed pastofficers certificate in recognition of the efficient way in which he had carried out his duties while in office. Arrangement was made to attend the Woodend church parade on Sunday next. The half-yearly meeting-of the Pioneer Juvenile Lodge was held before that of the parent Lodge. The officers elected were — G.M., Bro A. Shankland; N.G., Bro Nelmes; V.G.,BroN.W. Jones, and E.S., Bro A. Taylor.

Obituary. — There was a profound feeling of regret throughout the North Canterbury district when it became known that on' Monday evening Mrs Keetley of Peraki Street, Kaiapoi, had passed away. The deceased lady was born at Kegworth, Leicestershire, on Oct. 10,' 1819, and with her husband came out to Canterbury in the ship Mystery in 1859, settling down at Kaiapoi. Mrs Keetley, during the whole of her thirty-eight years' residence at Kaiapoi, wqq Tinted for her kindness and hospitality. In tho days when ploughing matches were winnlar, the deceased lady took great interest in them, and numbers throughout rfie province will remember her efforts in connection with them. When health permitted, she was a regular attendant at the Wesleyan Church, and in the early days of the province was most liberal in her support of that body. Of late years she has been in feeble health. She leaves a family of two sons and three daughters, also forty grandchildren.

Hubbard, Hall and Co.'s retail establishment will be open to-day, as usual, and closed all day Tuesday, and from one o'clock on Thursday, the usual half-holi-day. — [Advt.]
