REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Canterbury branch of ] the New Zealand Referees' Association was [ held last night at the Clarendon Hotel. There was a large attendance, and Mr F. T. Adams occupied the chair. Several questions as to different readings of various rules were discussed. The rule absolutely defining "a tackle," was referred to the New J Rugby Union's Appeal Committee, and pending its decision it was resolved to define "a tackle" as being made when the ball is held as well as the player, and that a player need not put the ball down unless it is held. A player who is behind one of his own side and charges up cannot be ruled off-side, and it was considered" unadvisable for a referee to instantly stop the game #if a man was hurt unless the play was dangerously close to him. The question of a player being unfairly over the goal-line when a kick at goal was being taken and touching the ball in the air before it went over the bar, occasioned a good deal of discussion, as there was an apparent contradiction in two separate rules on the question. It was decided to remit the point to the Appeal Committee, and in the meantime to allow the kicker another kick. Several minor points were discussed, and it was resolved to protest to the New Zealand Union against the rule allowing a kicker to wlace the ball on the crrnmid.
