SPORTS COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Eecord Eeign Sports Committee was held at the City Council Chambers yesterday evening. There was a good attendance, and Mr W. Harris (chairman) presided. A letter was received from the railway authorities, stating, in reply to the committee's request, that holiday excursion fares would be issued from all stations on May 24. A letter dated May 8 was received from Lieutenant - Colonel Gordon stating, in response to a request from the committee, that he would be glad to see volunteer events included in the programme for May 24, and to encourage entries therein. The secretaries of the Stanmore and Woolston bands wrote stating that those bands would be glad to assist in the gathering on May 24. Letters were received from the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, the New Zealand Cyclists' Alliance, and the League of New Zealand Wheelmen, granting permission to hold amateur competitions and open cycling competitions respectively, at the Queen's Birthday gathering. It was decided to request the Mayor to communicate with the members of Parliament for Christchurch and surrounding districts, asking them to use their influence to have the order for a volunteer field day on the Queen's Birthday countermanded, as it would seriously clash with the sports proposed to be held on that day in aid of the Hawke's Bay Flood Relief Fund. The committee proceeded to consider the arrangements in connection with the aquatic carnival to be held on Thursday evening next May 20, and it was decided to request the following gentlemen to act as officers : — Eef eree, Mr E. W. Eoper ; judges, Messrs J. M. Watson and E. J. Paull ; timekeepers, Messrs H. Goodwin and G. Jones ; starter, Mr G. Milne ; marksmen, Messrs K. Bassett, Qc. J. Smart and L. D.
