HOSPITAL BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the Hospital Board was held yesterday afternoon; present— Messrs E. D.Thomas (chairman), H. W. Perynian, A. Hamilton, J". Wallace, J. Dobson, C. M. Gray, E. Westeara, W. Dunlop, J. A. Caygill, W. Moor and Drs' Hunt and Stewart. Mr Murray apologised for his absence, and leave was granted. The balance-sheet showed the total receipts for the month of March to have been .£1796 38 2d, and the total expenditure £751 14s 3d. The total revenue due for the year 1896-7 was £10,850 Is Bd, of which £9450 3s 4d had been received. During the current month the following contributions had been received : — Amuri .£l4 9s sd, Akaroa .£sl 11s 6d, |and Government subsidy .6705 lls 8d; or a total of .£771 12s 7d. Outstanding contributions amounted to .£152 Bs, and the subsidies due thereon, and on amounts received to £475 17s 9d. The committee's report was read and adopted. During a discussion on the manner in which the wards are cleaned and fumigated, Dr Stewart said that he did not consider the New Zealand microbe as dangerous as the Home article. The wards merely wanted a rest and fumigation. The deaths by operation were within the normal limit, and that was the true test. Mr W. Dunlop moved, and Mr W. Moor seconded — "That it be a recommendation to the House Committee to communicate with the architect with a view to ascertaining if it is desirable to have the roof of the Hyman Marks ward covered with felt until the elates come to hand." Carried. 2 f On the motion of Mr Wallace, it was decided that the House Committee should consider the advisability of giving the stone-work as well as the bricK-work of the Nurses' Home a coat of oil. A letter was read from the resident medical officer, asking the Board to consider the question of an increase in his salary, and it was resolved that £50 per annum .should be added to it. The House Surgeon's report showed that during the month of March 103 patients were admitted to the hospital, 104 discharged, and 9 died, leaving 88 patients remaining on March 31. Forty-seven operations were performed under anaesthetics ; 384 patients were attended in the out-patient department. - It was resolWd that Nurses Nicholls and Spring shoultT be appointed to the two vacancies ou the permanent staff ; and that Probationers Bennett, Hay and Ewart shoixld be appointed nurses on the £25 scale. After appointing Miss Jeffreys to the nursing staff, the meeting terminated.
