A WELLINGTON SENSATION.

A SUPPOSED POISONING CASE. [Prom Otjb Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, April"2B. The public mind, owing to the nondisclosure of further particulars in connection with the alleged poisoning case which the police are investigating, is indulging in a considerable amount of surmise and speculation. Yesterday and to-day the subject of much conversation has been the probability that the death of a certain legislator was in some way connected with the police investigations. It was asserted that the grave of the deceased had been opened. This is, I understand, incorrect. The generality of people do not give credence to the3e surmises. It is pointed out that the person referred to died five or six months prior to the date on which the police have informed the Press that the person died who is supposed to Lave been poisoned. It is pointed out, on the other hand, that the police may have intentionally misled the Press in order to put them off the scent. It is again argued that the dead legislator was attended by trained nurses for three or four months prior to his demise, which would prevent poison being administered. The only other suspicious death in the locality indicated by the police was that of a gentleman once connected with a certain business in Wellington. The date of his ' death was ilso some months prior to the date hinted at by the police. It is said that his widow has been living with a man, and that the pair have been quarrelling considerably recently ; and it is supposed that the man has obtained certain information as to the demise of the woman's husband, which he has apprised the police of. Further and more definite information respecting the matter is daily expected, but up to the present the police have refused to give any particulars.
