ACCIDENT TO LORD BRASSEY. f

[Per Press Association.] MELBOURNE, Feb. 23.' Lord Brassey passed a bad night. He had slightly improved to-day, and his temperature was somewhat lower. AUCKLAND, Feb. 23. The man who died suddenly at the Wentworth mine, Whangamata, was Patrick Guyde. While drilling a hole he was noticed to suddenly roll over. He expired before anything could be done for him. It was stated by Dr Wright, who made a post-mortem examination, that the cause of death was the bursting of a blood vessel through over exertion. It appears that deceased was compelled to strike while in a cramped position. At the inquest a verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony. Deceased, who was fii'ty-five years of age, leaves a wife and five children in the south of the colony. WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. A man named Joseph Tinney, aged thirty-five, and a tailor by trade, jumped into the harbour last night. SergeantMajor Maedonald dived for him, and after five minutes got him out, but though three hours were spent in trying to resxiscitate the body, the efforts were useless. Tinney leaves a wife and two children, who are in Timaru. DUNEDIN, Feb. 23. Robert Woodhouse, aged twenty-two, was accidentally killed at Bannockburn, by a fall of earth from the face of his sluicing claim. It took some hours to unearth the body.
