THIS DAY. The North Canterbury Boai'd of Education met this morning ; present — Mr H. W. Peryman (chairman), Messrs A. Saunders, T. iff. Adams, R. Westenra, J. Rennie, T. S. Weston, J. Munnings and J. W. Sawle. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The report of the Buildings Committee recommended that tho Riccarton School Committee should be allowed to spend .£lO out of the incidental fund towards the school bath. The Mandeville Plains Committee having objected to any alterations in the .boundaries of the school district, it had been decided to confine the alteration of tho Flaxton boundary to that previously agreed upon. The Clerk of Works had been instructed to report upon a number of repairs, &c, applied for. Offers have been received of sites for an infant school at Belfast. It was recommended that lots 22 and 23, Wilson's estate, should be purchased if funds permitted. In reply to the request of the Addington Committee for additional accommodation, it had been informed that there were no funds available, and that the Board understood that there was ample room at the West Christchurch school for a large number of additional children. The Lyttelton Committee wrote that £i 2 had been spent in improvements to the school grounds, and it was recommended that the Board should contribute .£lO. Mr Sawle had been requested to inquire as to a site for a side school at the Hinds. The Chairman reported acceptance of tho following tenders : — F. Browning, repairs to house, Lakeside, .£l7 15s ; Bate and Hoskin, repairs to school, Mandeville Plains, £48 7s Gd; . W. Adams.. nineteen carpenters' benches for manual instruction class, .£1 5s per bench ; the tender of Messrs Petrie and Co., of .£355 for new school at Day's Road, Springetou, was accepted. The tender for improvements and repairs at Springfield being considered excessive the matter was left in abeyance. The Clerk of Works was instructed to call for tenders for repairs and reflooring at Eyreton school. It was also decided to allow the committee the sum of .£5 towards tho cost of fuel shed. A report was received from the Chairman and Mr Sawle oii the result of their visit to Kyle. The report, which was approved, was to the effect that it was not desirable to remove tho school to any other site, the present position being most convenient for the majority of children attending school : that before replacing the teacher's house (recently burned down) it would be better to wait for the development of the district, but that the fences, gates and outbuildings be reinstated. It was decided to reserve the right of application for refund of cost of house, but to inform the Department of the total cost of putting things in order. Consideration of several offers for the old material was deferred. A report was received from the Chairman, Mr Rennie and Mr , Sawle, on their visit to the new settlement at Highbank. The visiting members recommended the prompt erection of a school on the site reserved by Government, with two rooms attached for the teacher to live in ; and that a master be appointed, as a mistress would have great difficulty in obtaining lodgings. Approved. The Chairman reported that Mr Schmidt, clerjk of works, had resumed the entire duties of his department. The report was adopted. Mr A. Saunders reported upon the West Melton school, recommending that the buildings should be painted, and that if the library building were to remain in such close proximity to the school it should be roofed with iron. He also reported that the .£lO proposed to be given towards the school bath would be of little use, and recommended that .£2O should be contributed. It was decided that the Board should do the painting and allow the .£2O asked for. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. The Appointments Committee reported that the resignation of the mistress at Le Bon's Bay had been accepted, and it was resolved to advertise for a teacher for six months. The assistant master, Mr Grant, had been placed in charge of the Ashburton school until Mr Mayne's successor had been appointed. The Lyttelton Committee had been informed that the Board could make no arrangements at present as to the truant officer's services being available there. It was recommended that the mistress at Wakanui should be re-engaged for a further six months. The following pupil-teacher appointments were recommended: — Ashburton, Catherine Jane Breeze ; Christchurch East, Neptune Mulville (as of the second year), Robert King, Alice Partridge, Ethel Seaton and Ellen Kent; Mackenzie, Agnes Macpherson; Oxford East, Frank Horn ; Richmond, Edith Lawrence and John M. The following appointments were recommended: — Lauriston, Miss Dora O'Callaghan, mistress; Riccarton, Miss Amy Bishop, assistant mistress. The report was adopted. The report of the Chairman and Mr Sawle, who had visited the Kyle district, recommended that the school building should not be lemoved at present, as the position it now occupied was more convenient to a majority of the children attending the school, or likely to do so. They did not recommend the erection of a new master's house to replace the one burned down, thinking it better to await for a time the development of the district and the trend of population. They suggested that the school-grounds should be fenced with wire and standards, and that suitable outoffices should be provided. The report was adopted. The Chairman and Messrs Rennie and Sawle reported on their visit to Highbank. They recommended that a new schoolroom should be built at once on the Government reserve site, which was a most eligible one ; that two small rooms should be added to the school for the teacher to I live in, and that a male teacher should bo appointed. The report was adopted. A letter was read from the Typographical Association giving a list of the printing offices who employed union hands.
