PICNICS.

■ The annual picnic given by the Gas Company to its employes was held on Thursday at Mr G. King's grounds, Burwood. The party was conveyed by tram and spent a most enjoyable day. A good programme of sports was gone through, and games of various kinds were indulged in. Toys were distributed to the children. A " social " and dance were held in the evening at the Lyceum, the music being supplied by the Misses Creagh. Dancing was kept up till two o'clock, when " Auld Lang Syne" brought a very enjoyable gathering to a close. The annual picnic of Press employes took place at Mr J. Chadwick's homestead, " Chilcomb," Fendalton, on Saturday, and was a most successful and enjoyable gathering. The picnic party was conveyed to the grounds in drags, and wa3 accompanied by the Christchurch Professional Band, which also contributed music throughout the day. At the homestead amusements and sports of various kinds were carried out by the committees appointed for the purpose, and at the conclusion the prizes were distributed by Mrs G. G. Stead. The chief race of the day, the Press Handicap, was won by Alexander, who received a start of 6yds, R. Eastwood 6yds second, and W. Gillanders 12yds third. Just before the company "sat down to tea, Mr G. R. Hart and Mr Bradwell, on behalf of the employes, wished Mr and Mrs Stead a pleasant trip Home and a safe return, and Mr Stead returned thanks, after which, on his motion, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr and Mrs Chadwick for the use of their picturesque grounds. A meeting of the Sports Committee of Messrs O'Brien and Co.'s picnic was held on Saturday evening, when a good programme was arranged. The following is the handicap for the Premier Handicap, 120yds:— J. O'Brien scr, W. Beattie 3yds, F. O'Brien and T. Glennie 7yds, J. Ford Byds, T. Ansley and J. Kirby 9yds, M'Farlane and E. O'Brien 10yds, S. Jack, W. Thomas and G. Oppenheiin 13yds, S. Muir 14yds, A. Hunt 15yds, W. Napier 16yds, E. Maurice 17yds, J. Taylor 18yds.
