METHVEN SPORTS.
The New ' Year sports at Methven were held on Jan. 1, in a paddock lent by Mr D. Cameron, Springfield. The events in nearly every instance were well contested. The day being fine there was a large attendance. The booth and side-shows seemed to be doing good business; The following are the results *. — Horse Eaces. — Maiden Trot, one mile and a half — Mr Lyne's Zeta, 20yds behind (Owner) 1 ; Mr T. Mangin's Darkie 50yds behind (Owner) 2, Seven others started. Methven Cup, one mile and a quarter — Mr W. Hardwick's br m Tessa, list 71b (Owner) 1 ; Mr A. Y. Eichards' b g Windermere,. 12st 71b (Owner) 2. Only two started, Tessa winning by a length. Trot, two miles — Mr T. Mangin's Darkie, 80yds behind (Owner) 1 • Mr R. . Lyne's Zeta, 100 yds behind (Owner) 2. Five others, started. A good race was spoilt by Zeta breaking about a quaiter of a mile from home. Ladies' Purse, three-quarters of a mile — Mr J. Smith's b m Lapwing, list 71b (Owner) 1; Mr J. J. Stewart's eh m Coffina, lOst 71b (Owner) 2. Windermere 12st 71b, Te3sa 12st and Bankrupt 93t 71b also started. Lapwing'had all the best of a bad start,, and won easily. Hack Eace, three-quarters of a mile — Mr Richards's Cabin Boy 1, Mr Peckham's Chestnut 2. Eight started. Consolation Eace, about half' a mile — Windermere 1, Collina, 2. Two others started. A good race ; won on the post by . a head. Bachelors' Eace, ' one mile — Mr J. Dart's My Jack (Owner) 1, Mr J. Quinn's Bit o' Blue (Owner) 2. '
Athletic Events. — 100 yds Handicap Maiden Eace — J. Gallagher 2yds, 1; J. Murray 3yds, 2*. Seven started. Boys' Race, under fourteen — Stevens 1, Bruce 2. Girls' Eace, under fourteen — S. Manion 1, S. Devery 2; 120 yds Hurdle Handicap — J. Murray scr, 1 ; W. Aitken 6yds behind, 2. Five started. 100 yds Handicap — Murray 4yds, 1 ; M. Henderson scr, 2. Nine started. Three-legged Eace — Murray and Henderson 1, Fechney and Aitken 2. 440 yds Handicap — Murray scr, 1; E. Peckham 12yds, 2. Four started. Obstacle\ Eace, for boys under fourteen,— J. Macauley 1, F.
