THE AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON.
Ice naval correspondent of the London Globe, in his notes on the Nov. 6 says : — "It is currently reported that the Pearl, third-class cruiser at Devonport, will shortly be commissioned to relievo the Eingarooma, which has been six years on the Australian station. Tito Pearl i"s oijexactly the same tonnage as the Eingarooma, but although of only the same hox-se-power is rather a better vessel, I believe. In consequence of the large amount of sickness among the officers of the Phoabe, a sister ship to the Pearl, now stationed on the west coast of Africa, Captain M'Gill recommended to the Admiralty that a system of fans, driven by dynamos, should befitted in all ships of this class, where, except in the calmest weather, all scuttles have to be kept closed at sea for safety. This has been out in the Pearl, and the expense, after the first cost of the apparatus, will bo next to nil, as the electromotors are driven by the propelling s, machinery. The second-class cruisers Andromacho and Sinus jvere both siiggested at one time for the relief of the Eingarooma, but as they draw two feet' more water — an important disqualification in Australian waters— tho Pearl has been selected instead."
