JOHN TOOVEY.
Mr John Toovey, who had been ailing for some months, died at his residence, the Star and Garter Hotel, early this morning, at the age of sixty years. Mr Toovey was born at Hambleton, Henley-on-Thames, in 1836, and came to the colony in the ship Ainoor in the early sixties. Settling in the Templeton district, he carried on farming for several years. About 1873 he entered the employ of Messrs Saunders and Henderson as storeinan, and remained in that position until tk'e firm gave up business. He then joined the ranks of the licensed victuallers, and built the Star and Garter Hotel, which he ran for a few years and then' paid a visit to England. On his return to the colony he resumed hotelkeeping, and since that has been respectively licensee of the Zetland Arms, Collins's, the Caledonian, Sawyers' Arms and White Horse, and lately again returning to the Star and Garter Hotel. Mr Toovey was a member of the Eobert Burns Masonic Lodge, and also belonged to the Oddfellows', Foresters', Diuids' and Orange
Societies. He was one of the charter members of the Canterbury Bowling' Club, for which he did a very great deal in its infancy, and was, until obliged to give up active exercise through ill-health, an enthusiastic bowler. Deceased, who was well-known and respected, leaves a widow but no family.
