The Star. MONDAY, JANUARY 4, 1897. FEDERAL DEFENCE.
♦ THE CONFERENCE OF COMMANDANTS. [Per Press Association.! MELBOURNE, Jax. 4. Although great secrecy is maintained over the recent commandants' conference, some of the recommendations have" been allowed to transpire. As fortifications at Thursday Island and King George's Sound are federal works, it was suggested that it would be an additional guarantee of security if the works were regularly inspected by some officer specially chosen by the several colonies which contribute to the' cost. It was also resolved that the services of an Engineer officer, at a salary of .£IOOO per annum, should be secured on behalf of all the colonies, to advise on matters relating to fortifications, submarine mining and electric lighting. It was suggested that there should be extensive armaments at Thursday Island, and garrisons at Eoebuck Bay and Port Darwin. It is probable that the co-operation of the Admiralty will be invited to this subject, as it may be necessary to protect the cable in the vicinity of the land.
