LICENSING COMMITTEE.
CHRISTCHURCH. The quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Licensing Committee was held at noon to-day, at the Magistrate's Court ; present — Messrs H. W. Bishop, S.M. (chairman), W. Langdown, T. Gapes, J. C. Maddison, E. Smith, D. M'Lennan and F.Trent. The Chairman said he saw that in the police report there were notes with regard to two hotels. The licensee of the Occidental Hotel had had a conviction entered against him during the last three months. With regard to the Gladstone Hotel, the police had reason to believe that gambling had been carried on there, but there was not sufficient proof. Permits to carry on business till the annual meeting were granted to Mrs Walker, widow of the late licensee of the Zetland Arms Hotel, and Mrs Allen, widow of the late licensee of the Clarendon Hotel. Mr D. M'Lennan wrote asking the following questions : — " (1) Does the accommodation of the licensed hotels meet the requirements of an influx of visitors, such | as Christchurch generally has during the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show and the race times ; also if any further reduction of licenses is demanded by the result of the next election, would the public accommodation for visitors be sufficient at such times as here referred to ? (2) What has been done in the way of inspection and analysis of spirits, beer, &c, since the appointment of the new inspector for the Christchurch Licensing District, and was any effort made to see that the drink sold during race week, &c, in November, was of good quality ?" Inspector Broham said he had ascertained that the hotel accommodation amounted to 858 rooms, and it was estimated that there was an influx of between 5000 and 6000 visitors in show week. The Chairman arked where they all went to ? Inspector Broham said in addition to the hotels, they put up at boarding houses, or engaged rooms in various parts of the town, and numbers had to be content with shakedowns. With regard to the analysis of liquor, since July 1, the Government Inspector had analysed 20 samples of beer, 32 of whisky, 13 of brandy, 3 of rum, and 2 of port wine, and in no case had any adulteration been found. The questions and the answers were directed to be included in the minutes of the committee's proceedings. The meeting then closed.
