UNITED ELEVEN V. LANCASTER PARK ELEVEN.
The United and Lancaster Park elevens commenced their match at Hagley Park. The United captain won the toss, and his team going to the wickets first, remained there for the greater portion of the afternoon, in spite of the fact that the wicket was by no means perfect. Sims and E. D. Harman commenced well, but it was when T. D. Harman and Collins became associated that the stand of the innings was made. Probably both men would have done still better if they had not been foolishly run out. In Collins's case the batsman stood calmly outside his crease, apparently unaware that the ball had been thrown in, while the wicket was actually being put down. At the time he was really well set, and although he gave one or two chances, he played a capital innings. Harman made his runs in his usual attractive style, and he gave only one difficult chance. Kitto, Marshall and Gardner all made runs, a,nd the innings reached the respectable total of 234. Wilding was the most successful bowler for Lancaster Park, and, as usual, puzzled the batsman a good deal, while Bates and North bowled steadily, but Hasell, H. C. Ridley and Prebble were comparatively easy. The Lancastrians commenced badly, and had lost two good wickets for 9 runs when time was called. The following are the scores : — UNITED ELEVEN, h'ivat.
