AUCKLAND NEWS.

[Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Nov. 27. The ?even-roo-ried residence at Hunua of Matthew Wallace was burned down. It was insured in' the Imperial office for .£l5O. The furniture was uninsured. Mr Wallace lost £40 in cash. A visit, at the instance of the authorities of the Door of .Hope, was paid to certain Chinese tenements in a lane off Wakefield Street by Mr George Goldie, Inspector -under the City Council, and Dr King, medical officer of health for the city, accompanied by Sister Francis, of the Door of Hope. Two young girls were recently admitted into the home after having been found living with Chinamen in the locality in question,, arid Sister Francis wished to obtain for them their clothes, Ac., which hadrbeen left in the houses of the Chinese. In one of the. houses at the back of some empty . shops two girls were found in the rooms of Chinamen. One of the girls managed- to get away from the rescue party, but the other was detained She said that she had been brought to the house on-the previous evening while under the influence of drink, and did not know where she was till the morning-. She said that she had a mother living in Newton, but preferred going to.the Door of Hope to returning home. She was nineteen years of age, and the other girl about the same age. The girl was accordingly taken to fche Door, of Hope, and is now in that institution. It is intended to get the other girl into the home also if possible, in order to save ber from her present life. Several girls, it ia eaid, frequent the tumble-down and extremely filthy houses occupied by Chinamen in the vicinity of Wakefield Street.'. ' -,■'•■ ' ■
