NORTH CANTERBURY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

o A general meeting of this Institute was held at the Normal School this morning. Mr J. G. L. Scott presided, and there was a fair attendance of members, Mr W. Brock being present as the representative of the Ashburton section. A large amount of correspondence was received and dealt with. The Secretary of the Ashburton section wrote intimating that his section accepted the suggestions of the North Canterbury branch. On the motion of Mr Hughes, it was resolved—" That the Ashburton section be empowered to elect a delegate to the annual Council to be held at Auckland in January, 1897." The sub-committee appointed to consider a letter from a country teacher with regard to dancing in public schools, recommended — " That a letter be written to the Board of Education acknowledging their efforts in the past to discountenance •the practice of dancing in schools, but pointing out that in some schools still used for the purpose injury is done to the school furniture, and loss of time and in. terference with school work are also occasioned." The recommendation was adopted. A letter from Mr D. Lumsden, drawing attention to the progress made in the direction of the appointment of a truant officer, was ordered to be laid on the table. A motion was carried disapproving of the suggestion made by the Hawke's Bay Branch with reference to the nominations for president of the annual Council. A letter was received from Mr Grundy, secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute, stating that the customary grant in aid of the expenses of delegates to the Council would be paid. The Secretary intimated that the North Canterbury Branch was entitled to four delegates. The following were nominated : — Miss Kitchingman, Messrs Baldwin, Petrie, Scott, Howard, and Watkins. Voting papers will be forwarded to members, and the result of the ballot will be declared at a general meeting to be held on Nov. 7. The meeting then closed.
